RUSTIC CHARM
The twin log cabin structure holds a special place in the history of architecture, representing both simplicity and resilience. Dating back to ancient times, log cabins were built using logs stacked horizontally and interlocked at the corners. This construction method allowed for a sturdy and durable structure that could withstand harsh weather conditions. One of the most notable aspects of log cabins is their ability to blend seamlessly with nature. The use of natural materials creates a rustic charm that is both inviting and comforting. The warm hues of the wood, along with the distinct smell, evoke a sense of nostalgia and tranquility.
In addition to their historical significance, log cabins continue to be popular today due to their eco-friendly nature. The use of renewable resources such as wood makes them an environmentally sustainable choice compared to modern construction methods that rely heavily on concrete and steel.
The log cabin structure represents more than just a building technique; it embodies a connection with nature, resilience in adverse conditions, and sustainability. Its timeless appeal continues to captivate people’s imagination while reminding us of our roots and our responsibility towards the environment.

A LOOK AT THE LOG SYSTEM
The spruce wood is of the very best quality and sourced from northern countries with cold climates. As a result of this cold climate, the trees grow relatively slowly. The growth rings are closer together, making the wood more stable and durable. All of the timber is kiln dried in special drying rooms to approx. 14-16% moisture content, and as a result wood shrinkage is reduced. The fact that Lugarde cut the wooden components themselves means that they fit together with precision and produce corner connections with outstanding wind and water resistance.
You can recognise the popular log cabin system by its overlapping corner connections. This gives a classic and rural look and feel. The tongue and groove fits perfectly so the corner connections remain strong. The interlocking nature of the logs creates a solid structure that can withstand all weathers. This method of construction has stood the test of time and continues to be admired for its durability, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. The thermal properties of wood make log buildings naturally energy efficient, keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer.
Since 1978, Lugarde has been producing top quality garden buildings. This expertise is reflected in every building, right down to the tiniest detail. In the Netherlands and the UK they are the market leader. Lugarde uses quality timber sourced from northern countries. The cold climate makes the wood extremely strong. All of the timber is kiln dried in special drying rooms to approx. 14-16% moisture content. This limits shrinking and expansion of the wood and improves its quality.
THE FOUNDATIONS
Designed, engineered and manufactured to the highest quality standards. The low-carbon foundation solution that doesn’t cost the earth. The ground screw piles have significant load-bearing capacities and galvanised for an increased lifespan of 76+ years. They are capable of supporting point loads exceeding 75kN and withstanding significant vertical uplift and horizontal forces exceeding 45kN. The screw foundations provide a rapid, robust and sustainable base for projects across all sectors.
For this cabin the layout and number of screws has already been calculated by our structural engineer. A static load test will need to be carried on your land by Island Ground Screws Ltd. This will confirm the size of ground screws that will be required prior to setting them into the ground.
THE CONSTRUCTION
The timber sub-base has again been designed by our structural engineer so that it is made in 2 halves using C24 pressure treated glulam beams 195mm x 132mm with 195mm timber joists. Timber framing is a practical construction method which continues to prioritize sustainability using natural materials.
The 44mm logs are pre-treated which protects it against fungi and rot. Another advantage of the treatment is that the inside and all of the bits that can’t be reached after assembly are treated. For our display cabin we have chosen light grey but there are various colours you can choose from. These logs are all securely bolted together using 6.3 x 200mm advanced timber fixing screws to prevent movement.
